New Regulations of the EU Toy Safety Directive Mar 02, 2021

Toys contribute to the development of children and play with toys as an important part of the growth process of children. However, toys must be safe for children. Ensuring that toys sold in the European Union do not put children at risk is a priority. EU legislation aims to ensure that toys meet the strictest safety requirements in the world, especially with regard to the chemicals used in toys.



Since November 2019, the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC has been updated twice, which are adding new formaldehyde restrictions and tightening aluminum requirements.


On November 20, 2019, the European Union issued Directive 2019/1929/EU, aiming to amend Annex C of Annex II of the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, adding new requirements for formaldehyde in toys for children under 3 years old and functionally imported toys. These regulations will come into effect on May 20, 2021. The new regulations on restricting the use of formaldehyde are as follows:




On November 19, 2019, the European Union issued the 2019/1922/EU Directive, which strengthened the limit requirements for the migration of aluminum in toy materials. The new requirements will be implemented on May 19, 2021.
